PART 1:

Dear Fellow Classmates of '76:

We would like to thank all '76'ers for their tremendous support for our class service initiative, Spirit of Service '76 (SOS '76).  We are especially grateful to the more than 100 classmates who participated in The Class of '76 New Orleans Public Health Fellowship.  This fellowship was our initial project under the SOS '76 umbrella.

Rebekah Belayneh '08 is our fellow based in the New Orleans Health Department (NOHD).  She is two-thirds of the way through her fellowship.  Rebekah intends to pursue a career in health care and will be applying to med school.

Both Dr. Evangeline Franklin '76, Director of Emergency Preparedness for NOHD; and Dr. Joia Crear '93 Director of Clinical Services for NOHD, supervised Rebekah.  We are fortunate that she had an opportunity to work with two outstanding professionals.

Rebekah has benefited greatly from the fellowship and has made a significant contribution to the work of NOHD. She wanted us to forward her thank you note to all '76'ers:

"I would like to express my gratitude to the Class of ‘76 for giving me the opportunity to work in the New Orleans Health Department.  Being in New Orleans during this period of reform and renewal is very exciting.  I have been fortunate enough to participate in many activities during my fellowship.  Specifically, I have assisted Dr. Evangeline Franklin '76 in writing the Emergency Operations Plan for the Health Department and helped Dr. Joia Crear '93 with the management of the PCASG grant (Primary Care and Stabilization Grant) and the city clinics it supports.  I have been involved with various plans and meetings, pertaining to the New Orleans Master Plan with the City Planning Commission and a potential community-based research center in New Orleans with the Office of Recovery.

"This fellowship has been an excellent match for my skills and interests; and I have acquired new skills and interests along the way.  I am appreciative of the time that Dr. Franklin and Dr. Crear have taken to mentor me throughout this fellowship.  I look forward to continuing my career using the invaluable lessons and skills that I have learned.  Again, thank you for this opportunity."

We would like to add our gratitude to all '76'ers for their backing and encouragement for our class initiative.

With heartfelt appreciation,
Mimi Murley '76 and Illa Brown '76
